Lans Artem started
playing music around the age of 12. He began to play the bass,
which was a missing element in local groups. His father, a
respected fiddler, and his grand family contributed to a musical
environment rich enough to give him the desire to continue
his studies in music.
After completing a college degree in jazz
music at the College St-Laurent in Montreal, Canada, he pursues
his studies in contemporary music composition at the University
of Montreal. These studies focused mainly in the analysis
and development of modern abstract music that have contributed
for an invaluable background in the understanding of music
fundamentals. This era was influenced by such names as Pat
Metheny, Eberhard Weber, Julian Bream, Lee Ritenour, Chick
Corea, UZEB and Weather Report but he also listens to Latin-American
music including Flamenco, Bossanova, Jazz-fusion and Salsa.
Musicians like A. Carlos Jobim, Paco De Lucia and Antonio
Carlos-Jobim have therefore been part of that important influential
pool. He has also been member of a Salsa-Merengue-Cumbia group,
and though he was appointed as a keyboard player (Brass section
arrangements) the experience has been very valuable and formative.
By that time, he had played with many small jazz and pop-rock
groups and had started giving private music lessons.
Lansig Artem has
consistently worked and developed his own guitar technique
and composed music for it since the university era. He considered
the guitar a major source of inspiration and a colourful instrument.
As he states: "It seems a natural instrument to me as
I can translate a wide range of emotions and moods through
it and this with great nuances. It offers a rich palette of
both harmonic or melodic tones and as a solo instrumentalist,
the classical guitar appeared to be a perfect channel for
composing and finding new ideas."
After a few years break of non-playing music,
he took part of a new project - as a bassist - with friends
musicians and that made him decide to return to music and
to start producing his original guitar material.
Lansig Artem has
developed is own style of playing and composing which is wide,
unique and could be approximately categorized as Latin-flamenco-smooth-jazz
somewhere between Jesse Cook or Ottmar Liebert, Strunz &
Farah and Acoustic Alchemy. While most songs are definitely
Latin oriented, his style comprises a classical-fingerstyle
technique aspect that contributes to a sometime more aerial
new age touch.
